During the summer, we had an eventful maternity photo shoot capturing Shamyan’s pregnancy. The session, which required us to think on our feet due to weather and her partner’s injury, is a great example of how you can never completely be ready for the complexities that life (and parenthood) will bring your way.
As she prepares for motherhood, Shamyan reflects on the worries and uncertainty that all mothers share, as well as the attitude that’s helped her along her pregnancy journey.
I’m as ready as I’ll ever be.
“Ready for Baby?" During your pregnancy, you'll hear it a million times: "Are you ready?" Ready for childbirth, sleepless nights, and the wild ride of parenthood. For me? I always say, "I'm as ready as I'll ever be."
Honestly, nothing can fully prepare you for what's next. I've taken all the prenatal classes, grilled my Midwife and OBGYN with questions, but there's always that uncertainty of the unknown. I worry about everything! Will I be a good mom? Will I know when to feed her? Will she like how I comfort her? The right shoes, the best schools—the list never ends. The more I think, the more anxious I get.
So, I stopped obsessing over "being ready." Can anyone really be ready for everything parenthood throws at them? I doubt it. I'm taking it one lap at a time. First lap (still running it as I'm 38 weeks pregnant): Carrying a healthy baby to term. Next lap: Delivery. Then: Bringing baby home and surviving the first 3 months.
Completing each lap gives me time to reflect, grow, and adjust. So, I'm ready for the lap I'm on now and prepping for the next one. Being ready for now, while keeping an eye on the future, has made this journey way less stressful and a lot more fun. Ready or not, here we go!”
