In this post I will be sharing with you another twin newborn photography session. One of these cute little babies I photographed was only 4 pounds and very healthy. He’s the tiniest newborn I have photographed in the 11 years I’ve been doing this.
I asked Deana, the first time mom to these cuties, to share her experience through the twin pregnancy and being a new mom with twins. I absolutely loved her writing and honest thoughts. I hope you will too.
Thank you so much, Deana, for sharing!
Finding out I was pregnant with twins was a swift kick in the pants...
" Finding out I was pregnant was scary/exciting enough, finding out I was pregnant with twins at my first OBGYN appointment was a swift kick in the pants. Once the shock of twins wore off, I was through the first trimester and was past the extreme exhaustion and nausea and could finally enjoy my pregnancy. We kept the genders of the babies a surprise until they were born so when the doctor exclaimed "here's a baby boy, and here's another baby boy" I was overcome with emotion. They placed both babies on my chest and I hysterically cried for a good 20 minutes. It was overwhelming to finally meet them and be able to kiss their little heads.
Two babies are extremely hard work but the first 8 weeks have also been very rewarding. There have been many moments of frustration at 3:00 am while both babies scream for one reason or another, but when I look into their little faces it's impossible to feel anything but pride, joy, and love. I completely fell in love with both little babies the first time I saw the two of them on one of my MANY ultrasounds. It was so unbelievable to see little mini-humans moving around inside of me, but I knew very early on I would do anything and everything to keep them safe and well. When they were finally born, that feeling grew immensely.
I still have trouble thinking of myself as a mother. I look at the boys and still think "who are you and how did you get here?" I don't think becoming a mother has changed me per se, but I do think it has intensified some of my previous traits. I feel like I am more patient, understanding, protective, and perceptive. I have learned that I can actually function pretty well on 3 hours of sleep and that I am capable of anything.
Seeing my husband with our boys has been so wonderful. We are both the youngest in our families and our siblings all have children so we have been around tons of babies, but it's much different now that we have our own little ones.
Going through the pregnancy and the beginning of being parents has definitely brought us closer. I was very much taken care of by my husband throughout my pregnancy and I have learned that we can get through anything together. Having two means that both of us need to get up throughout the night for all of the nighttime feedings (every 2 hours!) and we tackle these as a team. He changes the diapers then gives me the baby for breastfeeding. I wouldn't be able to do it without him!
It's definitely an adjustment having to care about yourself second (and third) after two babies. Everything I used to take for granted now seems like a luxury, showering, going to Starbucks, going to the movies, now there is so many factors to take into account before doing anything else. It's definitely new. I have also learned to not sweat the small stuff. Some things that seemed to take precedence in my life previously no longer matter. It's a wild ride.
The advice I would give to an expectant parent would be to take all of your expectations and throw them out the window. You can prepare yourself for what you think it's going to be like but once you actually have the baby(ies) you have to expect the unexpected. I would also say learn to be flexible and try to go with the flow, and finally ... take every persons advice (there will be TONS of people who want to give unsolicited advice) with a grain of salt. Just because something worked for their baby doesn't mean it will apply to your baby. Learn to smile and nod and walk away.
It was important to me to have newborn photos taken of the boys because it's the beginning of their lives and that needs to be captured and remembered. We've taken tons of photos on our phones but having something professional was very important because they were already growing and bigger the day after we took the photos. I wanted to be able to cherish the first few days, and the fact that we did the newborn photography session when they were just 5 days old is so very special. When they are getting married and living their adult lives we can look back on these photos and see how far we've come. <3 "
